At Geeky Medics, we’re always interested in how our AI-powered Virtual Patients are used to support learning in different healthcare settings.
Our virtual patients provide realistic and interactive patient encounters, allowing healthcare students and professionals to practise and refine their clinical skills in a safe, controlled environment.
In this case study, Kayella Mackenzie from goMedic shares how their team uses virtual patients to enhance paramedic education. By integrating virtual simulations into their courses, they’ve created a flexible and effective way to help learners build skills and confidence.
Using virtual patients to support paramedic training
Can you tell us about your role and the students or learners you teach?
Our organisation (goMedic) develops and delivers specialised training to experienced paramedics. Our primary focus is working with paramedics who are advancing their clinical skills and scope of practice to work as Community Paramedics.
When developing training for this growing speciality, we must consider scheduling limitations (i.e. shift work), remote work locations and access to clinical skills practice. Our students receive advanced training in chronic disease management, focused health assessments, specialised therapeutics, diagnostics and pharmacology.
What type of courses or clinical skills are you using virtual patients for?
We use Virtual Patients with Geeky Medics to supplement our didactic content and prepare students for in-person skills and clinical training. Throughout several of our courses, paramedics work through didactic lessons, followed by virtual clinical practice with the Geeky Medics app.
This allows the paramedics to practice the skills they are learning in real-time without waiting for their in-person skills lab or clinical placement to commence.
How have you integrated virtual patients into your teaching?
Students are assigned specific virtual scenarios that align with didactic lessons and are also encouraged to practise stations that are challenging for them.
This allows the paramedics to reinforce their didactic knowledge and develop a cognitive framework for the specific assessment/skill/diagnostic before entering in-person training, ultimately establishing more effective use of time during in-person skills lab or clinical placements.
Because the virtual simulations can be completed independently or with others, we find the students are more likely to practise extensively before in-person learning. This ultimately reduces the natural adult learner’s fear of failure in a particular assessment/skill and helps build clinical confidence.
How have virtual patients benefited your students’ learning? Have you received any feedback from students?
Our students have commented on the unique nature of this virtual learning opportunity, allowing them to more effectively learn and retain information, especially when scheduling, geography and availability of in-person learning are limited.
They engage in more organic clinical conversations with colleagues because they are not learning under pressure. Because the quality of Geeky Medic’s virtual simulations is excellent, the students can work through simulations and flashcards independently, with other colleagues in their class or use AI simulation.
They have been able to practise in various settings, allowing for further knowledge reinforcement and retention.
We are very excited to be able to include this learning opportunity in our courses!
Final thoughts
This case study highlights how virtual patients can provide practical, accessible learning opportunities for paramedics. We’re pleased to see how goMedic has integrated virtual patients into their teaching and the positive impact it continues to have on their learners.
Our virtual patient platform allows educators to create virtual patient scenarios customised to their curriculum and learners.
