BMI is used to categorise a person based on their weight relative to their height.
BMI does not account for body composition and cannot differentiate between body fat and muscle mass. However, it provides a quick and easy way to categorise those at risk of being underweight or obese.

BMI is calculated as:

Interpreting BMI

BMI can be categorised as:
- Underweight: ≤ 18.5 kg/m2
- Healthy weight: 18.5 – 24.9 kg/m2
- Overweight: 25 – 29.9 kg/m2
- Obesity class I: 30 – 34.9 kg/m2
- Obesity class II: 35 – 39.9 kg/m2
- Obesity class III: ≥ 40 kg/m2
