In addition to transporting the egg, the fallopian tubes also play a crucial role in fertilization. The fallopian tubes are the site where the egg and sperm typically meet and fertilization occurs. When a woman ovulates, the egg is released into the fallopian tube, where it remains for up to 24 hours. During this time, sperm that has entered the reproductive tract through intercourse can swim up the fallopian tube and fertilize the egg. Once fertilization occurs, the resulting embryo will continue to travel down the fallopian tube and implant in the uterus.

Unfortunately, the fallopian tubes can sometimes become blocked or damaged, leading to fertility issues. Blocked fallopian tubes can prevent the egg from reaching the uterus or the sperm from reaching the egg, making it difficult for fertilization to occur. Common causes of fallopian tube blockages include pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, and previous pelvic surgery. In some cases, blockages can be treated with surgery or assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization.

In addition to blockages, fallopian tube damage can also result in infertility. Damage to the fallopian tubes can occur due to infections, scar tissue, or previous surgeries. In cases of severe damage, the fallopian tubes may need to be removed entirely, making natural conception impossible. In these cases, assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization may be necessary to achieve pregnancy.
