Introduction
Topical corticosteroids are used to treat a variety of inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis. These are available in different formulations, including ointments, creams, gels and tapes/bandages. This article will discuss the varying potencies of topical steroids, including considerations, example preparations and cautions.
Potency
Topical steroids are available in four different potencies:
- Mild
- Moderate
- Potent
- Very potent
The required potency is dependent on the underlying inflammatory skin condition, severity and location of the inflammation, the patient’s age and response to previous treatments.
Mild
Examples
- Hydrocortisone 0.1%
- Hydrocortisone 0.5%
- Hydrocortisone 1%
- Hydrocortisone 2.5%
Cautions
Generally safe to use on all body areas, but prolonged use should be avoided.
Moderate
Examples
- Eumovate® (clobetasone butyrate 0.05%)
- Betnovate-RD® (betamethasone valerate 0.025%)
