At Geeky Medics, we’re always interested in how our OSCE platform is used to support learning in different healthcare education settings.
Our OSCE platform allows both learners and educators to create, share, and practise OSCE scenarios.
In this case study, we spoke with Dr Fiona Crosbie from the University of Sunderland School of Medicine to learn how they’ve integrated the Geeky Medics OSCE platform into their communication skills sessions.
Using the Geeky Medics OSCE platform for communication skills training
Can you tell us a bit about your role and the students or learners you teach?
I have worked at the University of Sunderland School of Medicine since before we had our first intake of medical students in 2019. I lead phase 1 communication skills teaching (years 1–2).
I am also the year 1 clinical year lead, responsible for supporting year 1 students’ development of skills and professionalism in clinical settings.
How are you using the Geeky Medics OSCE platform with your learners?
I use the Geeky Medics OSCE platform during all communication skills practice sessions. I have written bespoke feedback forms for students to complete while observing a peer practising consultation skills with a simulated patient. These forms help students provide structured and specific feedback, checking against a list of required skills to identify any gaps.
A free-text box at the bottom of the form allows the observer to capture concise bullet points of the verbal feedback given during the session. The completed form is then emailed to the student who has been practising their skills.
Tutors do not contribute to the completion of the form or view it, although we encourage students to note any relevant tutor comments in the peer feedback. We advise students to revisit their forms to reflect on what they have achieved and to plan their next steps.
What were your main goals when you started using the platform?
Before adopting an electronic format, I used paper copies for feedback, and many students did not use them. There was also considerable paper wastage, and students generally did not retain their feedback sheets.
I wanted a paperless, sustainable option that would appeal to a digitally savvy generation of students. I also wanted to ensure students could receive and review feedback without feeling it was being scrutinised by the medical school – providing a space separate from formal assessment processes.
How has the platform benefited your students’ learning or improved the student experience?
Clinical tutors who observe students over successive sessions have noticed that students seem more capable of reflecting on previous feedback and applying it in subsequent sessions. This suggests improved retention of information and a greater willingness to learn from peers’ insights.
What feedback have you received from students or faculty about their experience using the platform?
Students have told me that the Geeky Medics OSCE platform is easy to use.
Final thoughts
This case study highlights how the Geeky Medics OSCE platform can support the delivery of communication skills sessions for medical students. By providing bespoke feedback forms and a convenient digital interface, learners can track their progress and reflect on their performance more effectively.
