When we inhale, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, creating more space in the chest cavity for the lungs to expand. This allows air to be drawn into the lungs. When we exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and moves back up, forcing air out of the lungs.

The respiratory system also includes other structures that help filter, warm, and humidify the air we breathe. The nose contains tiny hairs and mucus membranes that trap particles and bacteria, preventing them from entering the lungs. The mucous membranes also help to moisten and warm the air as it enters the respiratory system.

The function of the respiratory system is essential for our survival. Without oxygen, our cells would not be able to produce energy, and our bodies would quickly shut down. In addition to providing oxygen to the body, the respiratory system also plays a role in maintaining the body’s acid-base balance.
