The stomach produces hydrochloric acid to help break down food, but this acid is too harsh for the delicate lining of the small intestine. Bile helps to neutralize the stomach acid, creating a more favorable environment for the digestive enzymes to work.



Another important role of bile is the excretion of waste products from the body. Bilirubin, a waste product of the breakdown of red blood cells, is excreted in the bile. Bilirubin gives bile its yellow-green color and is eventually eliminated from the body in the form of feces.
