The Australian Medical Council (AMC) exams are required for international medical graduates applying via the Standard Pathway to obtain general registration as doctors in Australia.

The AMC assessments ensure that IMGs have the knowledge and clinical skills equivalent to an Australian-trained medical graduate.
There are two exams in the AMC Standard Pathway:

- AMC Part 1 (MCQ examination): a computer-based multiple choice exam testing your applied medical knowledge
- AMC Part 2 (clinical examination): a practical exam (OSCE) which assesses your clinical and communication skills

About the AMC exams
AMC Part 1 (MCQ CAT Examination)
The AMC Part 1 exam is a computer-based test of applied clinical knowledge, designed to reflect the expectations of a newly qualified doctor in Australia. It involves answering 150 multiple choice questions over 3.5 hours.
The AMC MCQ CAT is designed to test applied knowledge rather than simple recall, with many questions linked to patient vignettes and investigations (e.g. X-rays, ECGs).
Questions are weighted according to the following exam blueprint:
- Adult medicine (30%)
- Surgery (20%)
- Women’s health (obstetrics & gynaecology) (12.5%)
- Child health (12.5%)
- Mental health (12.5%)
- Population health and ethics (12.5%)
AMC Part 2 (clinical examination / OSCE)
The AMC Part 2 exam is a clinical examination (OSCE), which assesses whether candidates can apply their knowledge in practice.
It focuses on patient interaction, clinical reasoning, and communication, ensuring candidates can practise safely in the Australian healthcare system.
Station types in the clinical examination include:
- History taking
- Physical examination (including targeted or mental state exams)
- Diagnostic formulation and interpretation
- Management, counselling, or patient education
Each station is typically 10 minutes long (2 minutes for reading, 8 minutes to perform the task).
