An exciting opportunity exists to join the Central Laser Facility (CLF), at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, to work in a new project called Vulcan 20-20. The Vulcan high power laser facility sits at the heart of the CLF, and for decades has been internationally recognised as a globally leading laser facility, providing access for UK and international researchers working on a wide range of topics in high energy density and plasma science.
The CLF has recently secured funding for an ambitious £82M upgrade to the Vulcan facility (termed Vulcan 20-20) to increase its power to 20 PW, and its energy to 20 kJ. It will be the highest power laser in the world. We are looking for a wide range of scientists and engineers with excellent technical skills to help design, build and deliver Vulcan 20-20.
As part of the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC), the CLF contains many state-of-the-art laser systems and experimental stations, along with expert scientists, engineers and technicians that work with academic and industry users to deliver science across a broad range of fields. The CLF has around 200 staff and it is a very friendly, outgoing, externally facing sort of place. About the role
You will join the Vulcan 20-20 team and lead the high energy amplification of the broadband pulse to achieve the 20 PW peak power requirement. You will work on the development of the novel amplification stages based on the OPCPA technique and work on preserving the bandwidth of the short pulses.
The key areas of the role include:
- leading the design of the high energy OPCPA amplification stages, including modelling of the amplification stages to ensure they meet the required specification
- leading the installation and commissioning of the amplification stages
- liaising with the engineer team to design key specialist equipment
- working closely with other technical leads of the project responsible for the design of key parts of the facility
- financial responsibility for the amplification systems budget
You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field, as well having postdoctoral experience in a relevant scientific area with a record of independent research or autonomous thinking.
You should have good knowledge of laser science and nonlinear optics. You will ideally be familiar with the OPCPA technique and have experience in short pulse amplification, in addition you will have experience of using optical design software.
With good interpersonal skills you should have the ability to work as part of a team of individuals with a varying range of knowledge and experience.
The following criteria will be assessed at Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I)
- a PhD in physics or a closely related subject (or equivalent experience) (S)
- extensive knowledge of optics and laser physics (S&I)
- experience in the development of laser amplification systems and/or ultra short laser pulse generation systems (S&I)
- experience in scientific instrument development and design (S&I)
- able to work as part of a team and seek novel solutions to problems (I)
- experience with Zemax or other equivalent optical design software (I)
- previous experience in the management of projects and / or people (S&I)
