We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering for someone with a passion for robotics looking to use their skills to deploy autonomous systems in the factories of tomorrow. You will collaborate on the Research Centre for Connected Factories, cementing Sheffield’s role in leading digital manufacturing research in the UK.

The research will involve perception, planning, and control of robotics and other autonomous systems in industry. You will aim to develop radical new approaches to building the manufacturing infrastructure of the future, based on rapidly adaptable factories. Industry partners include Airbus, BAE Systems, GKN, BMW, Nestle, Siemens, Fanuc Robotics, and other renowned leading manufacturing companies.

As this role requires robotic programming and manufacturing skills, it provides an excellent opportunity to develop your knowledge on autonomous robotics with real industrial problems.

You will join the Digital Manufacturing team in our large and diverse academic department of Automatic Control & Systems Engineering. Your standing and approaches will further strengthen our strong international research profile and our reputation for novel, research-led teaching. You will work in a well-connected team with a world-leading reputation in the Digital Manufacturing field. We are well known internationally for our research, and are one of the largest research groups in digital manufacturing in the UK. You will use your robotics skills to provide essential support to the team, helping to ensure the reputation of the University of Sheffield.

This role offers you the opportunity to learn about different sensing and actuation technologies, program industrial robots, and support their implementation in industry. In this varied and dynamic role, you will be mainly responsible for developing novel approaches to implement autonomous robots. Other key aspects of the role may involve collaboration with industrial partners, preparing academic articles, managing projects, or contributing to develop new research proposals.

We are seeking candidates with a PhD, in any relevant area within robotics, perception, machine learning or autonomous systems. Experience in autonomous robotics, involving perception, planning or control, is essential. Knowledge or practical experience in machine learning would also be beneficial.

If you are passionate about autonomous robots, then we would love to hear from you.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
