Varanasi: UP minister of state (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and Food Security, Dayashankar Mishra ‘Dayalu’ on Wednesday launched the TB-free Panchayat campaign at district-level under the National Tuberculosis Eradication Programme.

The campaign started with the joint efforts of the district administration and health department with the cooperation of Piramal Foundation. He also flagged off the mobile van being operated in collaboration with Piramal Foundation to create awareness on the disease among the community. The van will go from village to village at community level to make people aware about TB. The campaign has started from Cholapur block as a pilot project in the district.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a pledge to make the country free from tuberculosis by 2025. The TB-free Panchayat campaign was launched at the national level from Varanasi on March 24 to fulfill the resolution.

The minister said with awareness among the people, TB will no longer remain incurable. Free medicines are being given to tuberculosis patients from all the dot centres set up by the government in the state. It is necessary to give complete treatment to all tuberculosis patients. “Don’t skip the medicine even for a single day. Tuberculosis patients are also being given emotional support, nutrition potli, and Rs 500 each during treatment under Nikshay Poshan Yojana,” he added.

He called upon people to extend support to make the campaign a mass movement in the state. Maximum number of people should join this campaign so that the country can be made TB free.

Chief development officer Himanshu Nagpal said all stakeholders will have to work together to give thrust to the TB-free campaign from panchayat level.

District tuberculosis officer Dr Piyush Rai said the initiative has started from Cholapur block, which houses 89 gram panchayats and 145 revenue villages. The CHO, village heads, panchayat secretary, ASHA workers and members of Health and Wellness Center will play an important role in the campaign. All of them have been trained by Piramal Foundation to make people aware of TB in all gram panchayats. Along with door-to-door screening of people, the village head and health workers will play an important role in removing various misconceptions about the disease from the society. If someone tests positive, their treatment will be started, and regular follow up of all TB patients will be taken, the official added.
