About the School and the Role

The Joint Educational Institution (JEI) with Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), in Xi’an, China, is a transnational education (TNE) partnership. The JEI, Queen Mary Engineering School, NPU (QMES) has fully established undergraduate programmes in Materials Science and Engineering with near 1000 students and an International Centre for Teaching and Learning championing Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Engineering and Materials Science. The JEI has 25 staff dedicated to delivery of the education programmes and management of the JEI operation.

The role will provide strategic leadership for ensuring the delivery by Queen Mary of its contributions to the JEI and will head the JEI Executive team, ensuring the day-to-day operation of the programmes is at an excellent standard and will work with colleagues in Queen Mary and NPU to design and deliver longer term strategies for the programme and partnership. The postholder will be appointed at the level of Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professor, depending on experience and demonstrated leadership (potential). We would prefer to appoint at the Professorial level for the right candidate.

About You

Applications are preferred from Professorial level candidates with exceptional record of leadership and Scholarship of teaching and learning in Engineering or Materials Science. However, candidates at the level of Senior Lecturer or Reader, with outstanding leadership potential are also invited to apply. All candidates should show evidence of strategic vision, strong commitment to maintaining and developing a collegial learning community and proven strengths in academic leadership and management.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus -London, with frequent flying to Xi’an, China. The Executive Vice-Dean position is expected to be for a five-year term (alongside the substantive permanent academic appointment at the right level).

The Professorial salary will be competitive starting from £77,951 per annum inclusive of London Allowance (for candidates at the Senior Lecturer / Reader level, this will be from £61,896) and is commensurate with the experience and academic standing of the postholder. The Executive Vice-Dean position attracts an additional responsibility allowance (£5000 per annum).
