Job Summary:

The Center for Technology Enhanced Nursing in the UW-Madison School of Nursing (SoN) is seeking an experienced, self-directed, dynamic colleague to join our collaborative team. The Center for Technology-Enhanced Nursing (CTEN) is a 5,000-square-foot space that includes 4 skills labs, 2 assessments labs, a simulated hospital environment, a simulated clinic environment, and a simulated home environment designed to offer students opportunities to explore and learn the role of the professional nurse in a variety of unique care settings. CTEN utilizes a variety of technology including high-fidelity full-bodied simulators to create active learning activities that promote the development of nursing clinical judgment and prepare students for professional practice.

This position works with the CTEN team and School of Nursing faculty and staff to help create engaging nursing skills and simulation activities for undergraduate and graduate nursing courses. The position provides direct instruction to undergraduate students in the skills and simulation environments and helps support the operational functionality of CTEN by consulting with CTEN staff on the scheduling of CTEN space, use of equipment, supplies, and CTEN resources. Technical skills and knowledge of adult learning principles that promote active learning, refine critical thinking, and increase student success are essential.

The clinical faculty hired under this PVL will have an A basis (12-month) appointment and be responsible for undergraduate (traditional and accelerated) and graduate (DNP) instructions and evaluation of student learning in simulated care environments in the academic year and summer terms. Clinical faculty collaborate with colleagues in course and curriculum development, improvement, and evaluation; engage in service activities aimed at accomplishing the mission and strategic vision of the School of Nursing including committees and taskforces; pursue scholarly activities individually or in scholarship teams that advance nursing science, education, or practice; and contribute to School of Nursing and University of Wisconsin-Madison goals for diversity and inclusive excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and evaluate skills activities in CTEN to promote competency and clinical judgement. Serve as a consultant for student remediation.
  • Collaborate with other faculty on curriculum and course planning at the graduate and undergraduate levels, using concept-based teaching strategies and AACN Essentials.
  • Collaborate with CTEN team on scheduling, supply inventory and usage, equipment usage, and resource allocation for activities in CTEN.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of CTEN equipment and use of CTEN technology for instructional purposes to support student learning at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Crosstrain between CTEN skills and simulation environments to develop and implement cohesive learning activities for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
  • Contribute to the School of Nursing mission through service activities (e.g., governance committees, outreach activities, or project task groups).
  • Pursue areas of scholarly interest (e.g., presentations, publications, and evaluation studies to improve teaching and learning).
  • Collaborate with colleagues in practice settings through academic-practice partnerships to contribute to student learning, practice improvement, or community outreach.
  • Work to support and enhance the diversity, climate, and inclusive excellence of the School of Nursing.
  • Engage in other activities appropriate to a member of the School of Nursing academic community, such as attending School meetings, participating in faculty development activities, and contributing to meeting the mission and vision of the School.

Qualifications:

  • One or more years of experience in teaching at undergraduate or graduate level in nursing, or in professional staff development in acute care settings; and
  • Three or more years of professional experience in an acute care setting as a registered nurse (RN), advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (R) (CHSE) preferred.
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interest in and commitment to the teaching mission of the School.
  • Experience with clinical instruction, active learning, concept-based teaching, simulation, and inter-professional education is highly desirable.

Individuals with certification as advanced practice registered nurse, clinical nurse specialist, or as nurse educators are strongly encouraged to apply; however, certification is not required.

Appointments for candidates prepared at the Masters level will be at the rank of Clinical Instructor. Appointments for candidates prepared at the doctoral level will typically be at the Clinical Assistant Professor rank.

This position requires most work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. The expected salary for this position starts at a rate of $90,750. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, the employee in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and other paid time off, competitive insurance and savings accounts, and employer-sponsored retirement benefits.
