Airway management is a crucial aspect of nursing that is taught in the Foundations of Nursing II course for the Bachelor of Science degree program in the first year. Airway management refers to the process of ensuring that the airway is clear and open to facilitate breathing for patients who are experiencing respiratory distress or failure. The course covers the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, the signs and symptoms of respiratory distress, and the various techniques used to manage airway obstruction.
Students will learn about the different airway management devices such as endotracheal tubes, laryngeal mask airways, and nasal cannulas. They will also learn about the indications, contraindications, and complications associated with these devices. The course will also cover the techniques used to suction the airway and the different types of suctioning equipment available.
Students will be trained on how to assess the patient’s airway and determine the appropriate intervention needed based on their condition. They will also learn how to provide oxygen therapy using different methods such as nasal cannulas, face masks, and ventilators.
The Airway Management II course is designed to equip nursing students with the knowledge and skills required to assess, manage, and maintain the airway of patients with respiratory distress or failure. This course is an essential foundation for nursing practice and will prepare students to provide safe and effective care to patients with respiratory problems.
